24″ Gas Wall Oven Review – Verona VEBIG24SS
The 24″ gas wall oven.
Pretty unsexy in the grand scheme of things. Look at some of the choices – Maytag’s CWG3100, GE’s JGRP20, Frigidaire’s FGB24T3e…most of these gas wall ovens would look great in your great-grandma’s apartment. Simple. Utilitarian. No frills.
But what if you want a little more sizzle (both in appearance and performance)?
Maybe you are a serious cook that just happened to end up in a prewar in Brooklyn Heights that only offers a gas connection and tiny 24″ cutout. You want looks, dammit you want PERFORMANCE to cook that soy Turkey this coming Thanksgiving!
Yes the options are limited but you don’t have to run with one of the aforementioned 24″ gas wall ovens.
Right off the bat you can see that the appearance of these ovens pretty much leaves the other ones in the dust…unless you prefer the look of a kitchen circa 1978.
The Verona VEBIG24 marries Italian design sensibility with the American professional look (big handles and knobs sir!)
Aside from the looks, the VEBIG24 delivers on a performance level as well. First it offers a stainless steel infrared broiler. That means quality searing. And let’s not forget about safety so the Verona burners offer flame failure safety devices which will terminate any gas flow in the event where a flame is extinguished.
The VEBIG24 offers an LP option but DOES NOT offer convection or self cleaning.
Now I appreciate the fact that these are niche pieces but the gas wall oven market is still alive and kicking, especially so in older major cities like NY, Boston etc. So the point here is that you really don’t have to get stuck with one of the other, less expensive options.
The Verona VEBIG24’s should run somewhere between $1299 and $1599 depending on color, so they don’t break the bank. The only comparable 24″ gas wall oven that sports a contemporary look would be the Blue Star 24″ with the side-swing but I am not going to recommend that b/c I have been thoroughly unimpressed by the Blue Star gas oven that we have on display. We have displayed the Verona VEBIG24 on and off for about 5 years and our Manhattan and Riverdale customers who went with it sing it’s praises left and right.
And for those of you stuck with a gas connection and a 30″ space, good news is on the way in the Fall 0f 2014 as Verona will be releasing a 30″ version, obviously to fill the space that Viking vacated when they killed their 30″ gas wall oven last year.
