Bosch 500 Series Dishwashers vs. Bosch 800 Series

I thought this was a worthy blog post because I had 3 different couples in the showroom today asking me the same question – What is the difference between these Bosch dw’s?
I can see the points of confusion because the 500 series is a really beautiful line and when they are just compared visually you say to yourself, “these look so similarly high-end, what’s up the price difference?”

I think the easiest way to chunk this down is like so:

800 and 800 Plus Series
Quietest dishwashers in the US.
More energy efficient than 500 series (200kw per year vs 259kw )
Offer third rack on top for cutlery (warning – you need to snap each piece in)
Offers China cycle
Offers water softener
Offer more wash cycles (6 as opposed to 4)
Slightly larger (15 place setting vs. 14)

500 Series
The 500 series is the VALUE move.
I particularly sweat the SHX55Rl55UC.
It is still a very quiet dishwasher.
It offers nearly the same place setting as an 800 and offers the same type
of adjustable rack as the 800 series (not the 3rd tray, I ‘m talking about the rack where glasses would go). In particular the SHX55RL5UC which is sold for under $1000 and with rebates you are usually netting out somewhere between $750 – $850.
I like the above model because I own its last iteration – the SHX45L15UC (this was replaced in Summer 2011) and my wife and I love it. It provides badass cleaning, is extremely quiet and looks sleek. No complaints here.

The bottom line is that you won’t go wrong with either the 800 Plus, 800 or 500 series.
It all depends on what you want to spend and whether the particular add-ons in the 800 Series speak to you.

Bosch SGE63E15UC – Short on Height, Tall on Value!

No matter how much product literature our manufacturer reps saddle us with, it’s amazing how I constantly discover new things about their products
from the most unlikely sources. Case in point – I have been lectured on Bosch’s new line of dishwashers steadily for the past 2 months. Thought I knew it backwards and forwards.
Then my next-door neighbor visits the showroom last week and asks if I carry this particular Bosch model called the SGE63E15UC which he described as being a bit shorter in height than normal dw’s. I will be 100% honest – I had no idea what he was talking about. I thought the Bosch model was some derivative piece from Sears, but I was wrong. We carried it.
Even my installer was juked by this model, because when he showed up at the neighbor’s house and saw the cabinets he said “no way this fits, you need to buy a Fisher Paykel”.
Wrong!

My neighbor loves the SGE63E15UC and all that it is bringing to the table:
49 decibels (remember anything under 50 is quieeeettt)
Exceeds Energy Star requirements by 150% for water conservation
6 wash cycles
AND MOST IMPORTANTLY – ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant for lower countertop installation

Goes to show you, even the experts don’t know everything…especially in a business where we have to chase 6000+ SKUS…

New Bosch 800 Plus Series Dishwasher: Best Dishwasher in US?

When I met Bosch’s head designer at an appliance show earlier this Spring, he forewarned me that the new class of Bosch dishwashers that would be appearing in the Fall of 2011 would simply outlclass and outperform not only the competition, but anything that Bosch has previously offered in the US.

The story goes that Bosch left the 32″ laundry business so they could apply laser-focus to their dishwasher business. Well the new dishwashers are here and early signs are that they are knockouts. In particular to check out (if the budget allows) are the Bosch 800 Plus dishwashers, the ultimate and most expensive dishwasher offering from Bosch.

The king of the new offerings is the Bosch SHX9ER55UC whose piece de resistance is their sub-40 (39!) decibel rating. So Bosch wins the title as the first dishwasher manufacturer to break the 40 decibel mark. Bravo!
If noise is a big issue for you, then this is the dw to purchase. I own a SHX45L15UC Bosch which is only 1 year old and is now seriously dated thanks to the new models. My dw is 48 decibels and is incredibly quiet, so to think that the SHX9ER55UC is almost 10 db’s quieter is hard to fathom.
Here are some more features offered by the SHX9ER55UC:
- 39 dbs (quietest dw in North America)
- Piezo touch controls (translation – touch pad controls instead of buttons)
- 200 kw per year in energy usage and only 2 gallons of water used per load which is the best in its class
- Full stainless tub
- Water softener
- 6 wash cycles
- Express wash, Delay start, Extra tall item sprinkler
- 3rd rack on top
- Available in stainless or a version that will accept a custom panel

Minimum advertised price is $1899

The two “step-down” models (if you can even use that term in the 800 Plus line) are the SHX8ER55UC and the SHX7ER55UC.

SHX8ER55UC – 40 decibels (still insanely quiet), 180kw per year of usage, stainless tub, third rack.
As you can see, very similar to the SHX9, less the Piezo Touch controls and 1 decibel louder.
Only available in stainless.
Minimum advertised price is $1499

SHX7ER55UC – 42 decibels (a little louder but still whisper quiet). Energy consumption jumps to 259 kw/year which is still a great number but pales compared to its siblings in this series. Still, most of the features are here – stainless tub, water softener, multiple wash cycles and the third rack.
This dishwasher is available in a custom panel version as well as stainless.
Minimum advertised price is $1299

New Bosch Dishwashers – The 500 Series – SHX55RL5UC

Bosch has revamped their dishwasher line and it looks as if they have significantly upped the ante so we’re going to take a look at what’s new.

In this post I’m going to focus on the 500 series which is Bosch’s most popular line in the US.
Though the 500 series falls in the middle of their offerings, the most value can be found in this line, as some of the 500-series models offer features that can only be found in top-of-the-line models from domestic dishwasher makers, all while coming in at reasonable price points.

My personal favorite in the old lineup was the SHX45L15UC, otherwise known as the SHX45P05UC (same model, just a different sku). I own this dishwasher and can state firsthand that it is not only extremely quiet, but packed with features that you would normally find in a $1000+ dishwasher.
Bosch has now improved on the SHX45′s design, replacing it with the new SHX55RL5UC.
The SHX55RL5UC features:
- Stainless steel tub
- 4 wash cycles
- 46 decibels (improving on the SHX45′s 47 decibel rating)
- 14 place setting capacity
- 19 hour delay start timer
- Sanitize option
- Half load cycle for small loads

Energy efficient, quiet and dependable. The best part is that the SHX55RL5UC can be had for less than $1000, whereas it is bringing value to the table that you’d normally see in a $1200 dw.

This dishwasher is only available in stainless. If you want one in black or white or with a recessed handle, you would have to look at the SHE55R5 (recessed handle) or the SHX55R5 (bar handle). These two dishwasher are also 1db quieter, coming in at 46dbs.

New Bosch Dishwasher Promotion till May 31 2011…Jump on This!

Starting in mid-May, Bosch will be taking the hammer to the rest of the dishwasher industry. Strong words, but ’tis the truth. Here’s why: Bosch will be offering rebates of up to $150 on select models till May 31. Yes, you ready that correctly: $150. (It is actually two rebates – 1 for $50, another for $100).

I can tell you that one of the dishwashers is my personal favorite (yes, I own it) SHX45L15UC from the 500 series. Figuring that this model usually sells in the high 8′s, when the rebate is applied you will net out at a tick above $700 for an utterly insane dishwasher.

I have a customer who is putting together a sick, sick kitchen in Scarsdale NY and suffice to say the appliances that are going in there are world beaters. He needs 2 dishwashers and he point-blank asked me, “I want the best dishwasher out there”.

Hmmm…what a heavy question. Let me think, think , think here….

If money is not an option, I’m picking a higher-end Bosch, and in particular the SHE68E15UC dishwasher. This should sell for anywhere from $1549-$1799.

Bosch has taken their share of lumps over the last few years. One of the criticisms that you will hear aimed at them is that their dishwashers are nowhere near the level of the Bosch’s that were on the market 10 years ago. You’ll hear people say that the new ones are too “plastic-y” and that they just feel cheaper.

I’m not going to deny that if you are looking at an Ascenta series model (go find me a “rich” feeling $599 dishwasher). But you CANNOT rag on the 800 Plus Series dishwashers. No way. This is the line where Bosch plays for keeps.

I don’t care which high-end dishwasher manufacturer, domestic or European, that you roll out.
Drawers. Tall tubs. Smart dispense. Third and Fourth racks. Bring it. The Bosch bests all.
Look at the numbers:

6 wash cycles and 5 options..ok who cares about this, no one buys a dw based on wash cycles.

Quiet. How quiet? 40 decibels quiet. I own the SHX45L15UC which is in the high 40′s and it’s a very quiet dw with the only sound you’ll hear being the swishing of water. That means that the
SHE68E15UC is probably so quiet that you won’t even know that it’s working.

It’s also the most energy efficient dishwasher in the US – using 180kw per year.

For you 3rd rack buffs, Bosch has included one. Warning , you need to snap your silverware in.
